A GUIDE TO THE COST OF FOAM INSULATION

Updated: Aug 7

Foam insulation offers more benefits than typical fiberglass insulation. Foam provides the strongest air sealing result and offers the highest R-value when compared to other insulation types. When pricing out various solutions for your insulation project, there will be many factors to consider when you analyze prize. This guide will help you understand what factors to consider for your insulation project. Make sure you keep reading below for some helpful tips!

FACTORS OF INSULATION COST PER SQUARE FOOT

One factor that impacts price is the material or type of insulation that is installed in your home. There are several different options available on the market, and you can't calculate how much you'll spend on the job until you know what you're getting. The main four choices include:

  • Blown-In Insulation

  • Open-Cell Spray Foam

  • Closed-Cell Spray Foam

  • Batt Insulation

COST OF FOAM INSULATION BY THICKNESS

If you opt-in for a thicker application of foam, you will realize additional benefit such as better air sealing and higher R-value. At two inches thick spray foam is also a vapour barrier. Each two inches is an additional ‘pass’, as the applicators go back over a layer of foam they have already made. As foam builds itself up better on foam than on other surfaces, the additional passes will cost slightly less per square foot than the original one. Over time, you will recapture your initial investment through your energy savings. You'll need to make your foam insulation at least 1" thick. Our consultant will walk you through what is required, and what is available and what you can expect from each level thickness you can apply.

OTHER FACTORS THAT IMPACT FOAM INSULATION PRICE

If you want to figure out how much you'll spend on foam insulation installation, knowing the type of foam you want and your desired thickness is a good starting point. However, there are a few other factors that can impact the price, so make sure you think about these things as well.

SQUARE FOOTAGE

The size and complexity of your home will have a big impact on the overall cost of the job. If you live in a large home, you will have to pay more money to insulate it, and the long term savings in smaller energy bills will be greater. Insulating a small home may give you an ending price that's a bit lower than average. Complexity of the job plays into the overall cost too, as a job that requires more labour and expertise will be a higher price per sq ft than a job that is easier and quicker to complete.

NUMBER OF WALLS

Like square footage, the type of build, wall configuration and home layout is factored into the pricing of your insulation project. How homes are built has changed significantly over the years. More specifically, there could be asbestos remediation required, or plaster walls could complicate how we apply the new insulation product. Don’t let this frighten you! We are professionals at what we do, and will work to ensure we insulate your home using the installation method with the least disruption.

LABOR COST

Depending on where you live, the labor cost to insulate your home with foam can fluctuate. Too often companies from larger cities will quote square foot prices over the phone or off plans, without taking into account the travel, accommodations or local supplier relationships needed to make a project go smoothly in the Muskokas or Northern Ontario, and the customer ends up with many extras or even an imcomplete job. Make sure you get a few quotes from companies in your local area so you know what to expect.

ACCESS

In addition to additional labour costs associated with working in the near-north, Soundseals Insulation is well versed on other access issues often experienced in the area. With four-wheel drive trucks, good relationships with local barging companies, and knowledge of all the local lakes we can help insulate your project in some of the trickiest situations.
